Rwanda is a crown. Its shiny black mountains are jewels and its rivers sparkle like diamonds; but looks can be deceiving. Ravaged by 1994 genocide, Rwanda is recovering from a nightmare. The nightmare, which lasted about 100 days, was caused by historic tensions between Hutu and Tutsi people. The bloodshed in those 100 days dyed rivers red and devastated communities. It is estimated that 800,000 people were murdered.
Samaza Gashindi’s parents were some of those killed. Orphaned, this brown eyed 15 year old has survived on his own since he was a little kid. He knows how to scrape together a meal of bread crumbs and how to dodge cars as he begs on busy street. He’s a survivor, but he shouldn’t have to be. God’s heart breaks for kids throughout Rwanda like Smaza.
God does not turn a blind eye to Samaza, but says “The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
We in the west have the power to transform Samaza’s life. It takes the form of $100 to make sure Samaza can attend school this year. The local church will be on the front lines caring for the daily needs of Samaza and other children like him, this is a team effort. We have an opportunity to be ‘salt and light’ in a very dark world, don’t let this opportunity pass.
Rwanda will be coordinated through the team in Kenya. This is our first year of partnership.
