Burundi is a small country in East Africa that has a population of 8,988,091. Its major languages are Kirundi, French and Swahili, and the majority of its people are Roman Catholic. The literacy rate is 67.3% for males and 52.2% for females. Burundi is in recovery from years of civil war between the Hutu and Tutsi groups (CIA World Factbook). Children in Burundi face violence geared toward children and women, recruitment of child soldiers, and child labor, in addition to shortages of drinking water, preventable diseases, and malnutrition (UNICEF).
Burundi will be coordinated through the team in Kenya. This is our first year of partnership.
